Auxiliary Police Officers Needed

By Fairfax County Police Department, January 2003

The Fairfax County Police Department Auxiliary Unit is seeking volunteers. The unit consists of unpaid volunteers who are trained to perform a variety of operational support and administrative assignments within the Police Department. Some of the duties performed by the auxiliary police officers are:

  • Traffic control

  • Security of prisoners

  • Communications

  • Desk assignments

  • Fingerprinting

  • Crime prevention

  • Special events

  • Patrol support

Prior to being sworn as an auxiliary officer, each applicant must complete a comprehensive training program that is conducted during evening hours over a period of several months. The Police Department supplies uniforms and equipment upon successful completion of the training. Auxiliary officers perform 24 hours of volunteer service every month to maintain status in the unit.

Selection of candidates is based on an overall assessment of each applicant's qualifications, background and availability to support the Police Department during periods of greatest need. To apply or obtain additional information about the Fairfax County Police Auxiliary Unit, or to obtain special assistance, contact the auxiliary coordinator at 703-280-0576, TTY 703-204-2264.

Be an Explorer!

By Fairfax County Police Department, January 2003

Are you between the ages of 14 and 20 and interested in law enforcement? If so, the Law Enforcement Explorer Program is for you. This is a career-oriented program, established by the Boy Scouts of America, for young men and women who are interested in exploring the criminal justice system and law enforcement. The program gives young adults hands-on experience and the opportunity to work with police officers who share their experiences, skills, and knowledge.

Fairfax County Law Enforcement Explorer Post 1742 was created in 1975 and currently has 35 members. The Post meets twice a month. These meetings provide the Explorers with exposure to careers in the field of law enforcement and to training in police procedures such as:

  • Traffic control

  • Crime prevention

  • Accident investigation

  • Fingerprinting

  • Court procedures

  • Communications

Members who are 16 years and older are eligible to ride along with officers, once they have been a member for at least six months. Explorers have the chance to experience real situations in police work by riding a maximum of two shifts per month with Fairfax County Police Officers.
